JANUARY 1, Proverbs 1:1-7

“As wise as Solomon.” Have you heard this before? Who is Solomon? He was King David’s son and successor. He prayed for wisdom instead of riches. He became a very wise ruler, as well as an excellent architect, astronomer and writer. Sadly, he became proud later in his life and did many foolish things. Because of his sins, he was in a sorry state. However, he was inspired by God to write almost the whole book of Proverbs.

Proverbs is a poetic book of godly wisdom. It teaches Christians how to behave towards family, friends and even enemies in a godly manner. It warns us against temptations of the world and teaches us how to avoid sin. It also guides us on how we should speak and what we should do with our time, energy and money.

Proverbs tells us the differences between a wise and a foolish man. First of all, who is a wise man? A wise man believes and loves the true and living God. Because he wants to know what he can do to please God, he will seek knowledge and understanding of God’s Word. On the contrary, the foolish man hates instructions. He has no respect for God’s Word because he says in his heart that there is no God. (Psalm 14:1).

God is all-knowing. Who can be wiser than God? Let us be like the wise man that never stops searching God’s Word and doing His Will. God blesses the wise man.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, give me wisdom so that I can live each day wisely. Help me to study Your Word diligently and live according to the teachings from Your Word. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
