My dear readers,
1. "Lives which may change your life"
In the last quarter of this year, at Sunset Gospel Hour, we shall feature how God called each of the pastors of our group of B-P Churches to the holy ministry – to serve the Lord Jesus "for life" in much the same way as John Sung "burned out" for the Lord throughout China and southeast Asia, saving thousands of souls (mainly Chinese) in China and the Chinese in southeast Asia.
I write as one whose life was truly transformed by this "Man of God."
2. John Sung’s life
How John Sung’s life transformed thousands of lives of "fellow Chinese" in China and the far-flung lands of south Asia – Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Indonesia! Just one man, in 15 years of Holy Spirit-filled preaching of the Gospel, turned thousands of fellow Chinese from sin to "new life in Christ" – to serve the King of kings and Lord of Lords.
I can do no better than quote from "John Sung My Teacher" by Rev Timothy Tow in his Foreword:
"Dr John Sung’s ministry was unique. His one consuming passion was to turn men and women from sin in repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ, and thus to revive the Church. Wherever he preached no meeting place could hold the overflowing crowds. His preaching was direct, piercing and electrifying. At every meeting convicted sinners repented in tears and lives were changed. One of his co-workers in China, William E Schubert, in his book ‘I Remember John Sung’ wrote:
‘Dr John Sung was probably the greatest preacher of this century, I have heard almost all the great preachers from 1910 until now, including R.A. Torrey, Billy Sunday, Henry Jowett, the great holiness preachers, the Methodist bishops, including Bishop Quayle, even Harry Emerson Fosdick, who set a great example of the homiletic art, though I did not agree with him, and finally Billy Graham. Yet John Sung surpassed them all in pulpit power, attested by amazing and enduring results …’
By the fruits ye shall know the tree. John Sung’s converts bear lasting testimony to his astonishing ministry. Today, fifty years and more after his first visit to Singapore, John Sung fruits are scattered everywhere, faithfully serving the Lord in every nook and corner of Southeast Asia. Many recall with tearful nostalgia the Spirit-blessed hours sitting at the feet of God’s beloved servant. In not a few hearts, the fervor of revival fire lingers on."
3. At SGH are the "Indirect" fruits of John Sung
None of the preachers at SGH are "John Sung fruits" (not having heard his preaching). We may attribute their calling to the "indirect" result of his ministry. These have come under the ministry of Timothy Tow – "fruit of John Sung" – thus indirectly are also "John Sung fruits."
We pray that the fervency and earnestness of John Sung’s preaching has "rubbed off" on to these younger men. I pray that some of the John Sung spirit still lives in this unworthy servant of God on the two nights when he speaks.
May all glory be unto our God as each of the twelve preachers gives his testimony.
All praise be unto our great God and Saviour!
Yours faithfully in the Saviour’s Service,
Dr SH Tow, Sr Pastor
