Pastoral Chat

28 June 2015

My dear readers,

1. The Preaching of the Cross is the Power of God (1Cor 1:18-29)

Man needs to be saved. By himself he is helpless, doomed to condemnation and everlasting destruction. Modern man has science and technology. He can improve social and material comforts for this transient existence, but the end thereof is death. Man needs God: God must help.

God has come to help man, from the first day (Gen 3:15, 21), until today. The Gospel or Good News was announced and foreshadowed in the Garden. That was, and is, God’s plan.

God has one plan for man’s salvation, only one. Man has many ideas, but every one has failed and will fail. God’s plan succeeds, every time to everyone who believes (1 Cor 1:18, 24).

The Apostle Paul had one message, only one. "For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified" (1 Cor 2:2).

2. What is the message of the Cross of Christ?

It is God intervening in man’s helplessness.

It is God declaring war on Satan.

It is God sending His own Son ("seed of woman") to be our sacrifice, the "Lamb of God" to take away our sins.

It was the blood of the Lamb which redeemed Israel from hopeless bondage in Egypt, even the Passover blood which overcame Pharaoh’s iron hold.

It was the lifting up of the brazen serpent in the wilderness which gave life to those who looked (Num 21:9).

It was Christ, the Lamb of God, sacrificed on the cross of Calvary, which has power to save all who look to Him in faith. This is Gospel.

It is the only message for the salvation of twenty-first century man, no other message. Any other is false.

3. How shall we preach the message of the Cross?

We preach no other message.

We preach it wherever we go, everywhere, every time.

We preach it urgently, but graciously and lovingly.

We preach it by our lives. Only pure and holy living makes the message effective.

We preach it at every level: from kindergarten to university, "for all have sinned" - there is no difference. Only the message of the cross can take away sin.

We preach it triumphantly (2 Cor 2:14), because our Lord is ever triumphant, for "… he rose again the third day according to the scriptures" (1 Cor 15:4).

We preach it joyously, with great expectation "looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ" (Titus 2:13).

4. Best age to lead them to the Saviour

Many spiritual giants received the Saviour in early childhood:

Charles Spurgeon at twelve.

Jonathan Edwards at seven.

Count Zinzendorf at four.

Matthew Henry at eleven.

The best age to sow the Gospel seed is the childhood years. Our one objective is to seize the golden opportunity to win precious lives for the Lord, before the world gets them.

Every soul won for Jesus is worth more than the whole world: that is the value we must place on souls. No industry is more rewarding. Your sacrifice may add a soul to Heaven’s Book of Life.

What joy, when you arrive in Heaven, someone will thank you because you care!

5. Honour your Father and your Mother

God commands allpeople to honour Father and Mother: "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth" (Eph 6:1-3).

Obedient and God-fearing children make strong families and stable communities, and good leaders of future society. It is top priority to train up our children to love parents and family and country; above all, to love God, our Creator and Redeemer. May every blessing from God be with you, your child, your home.

God bless all readers.

Yours faithfully in the Saviour’s Service,

Dr SH Tow, Sr Pastor
