My dear readers
1. A CLOSER WALK WITH GOD AND A NEW SPIRIT OF WORSHIP - II
Dr SH Tow, April 2003
2.5 VICTORY OVER SIN
God gave intense awareness of the sinfulness of sin. God’s servant Dr John Sung preached with Holy Spirit unction. The Word of God pierced hearts with Holy Spirit power, creating an intense awareness and revulsion to sin. As at Pentecost, men and women, boys and girls, were pricked in their hearts and turned to
the Lord in repentance. The grace of God, the free salvation of the cross and the efficacy of the cleansing blood were simply and powerfully presented. No sin was too great to be washed by the blood, no sin too small to be ignored. Tears of contrition flowed freely from children and adults alike. Everyone was urgent in striving to enter the strait gate.
2.6 JOY IN LIFE AND SERVICE
The newfound joy of salvation was manifested by an infectious mood of song. Each sermon was punctuated by hearty singing of spiritual songs and Gospel choruses. Salvation songs were carried from the meeting hall into the streets, buses, homes and schools. Everywhere the tunes of the Kingdom could be heard. Revival fervour transported us almost to the gates of Heaven, so much so that the sweet sounds of Heaven spontaneously broke forth from thousands of revived believers. Service for the Lord was no burden but a blessing. Every redeemed soul became aware of unsaved loved ones needing to hear the Gospel. Witnessing for the Lord was everybody’s business.
2.7 BURDEN FOR LOST SOULS
At the end of the 1935 campaign over 100 Evangelistic Bands were formed, each with two or three members, pledged to go out witnessing once a week. Armed with gospel tracts the bands went witnessing to neighbours and people in the villages during the weekend. As a lad of eleven I used to follow Grandpa tracting in the Braddell and Upper Serangoon / Paya Lebar areas. Ashamed? Embarrassed? Troublesome? Such thoughts retreated as the SPIRIT OF REVIVAL took charge. After all, we belong to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! We have a mission - the GREAT COMMISSION from Him. It must be carried out at all costs. Souls must be won from the white harvest fields into God’s Kingdom.
2.8 URGENT EXPECTATION OF THE LORD’S RETURN
Dr John Sung fired our hearts with the blessed hope of our Lord’s imminent return, which is near, even at the doors (Matt 24:33). We were gripped by the promises and warnings of God’s Word and re-ordered our lives accordingly, "looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God ..." (2 Pet 3:12). The promise of Christ’s coming is an urgent and timely message for revival, as we see signs of the times multiply before our eyes. "Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him..." (Rev 1:7). Return, O Lord, how long? Until then, O for a closer walk with God! — The end
2. "We count them happy which endure" James 5:11
Daily Remembrancer, August 26 EVENING
THE CHILD OF GOD DOES NOT TRAVEL A SMOOTH COURSE. At times the Father in heaven tries him. Our afflictions are His trials. Every professor shall be tried. Many faint in the day of adversity. Some go back and walk no more with the Saviour. The effect of the stroke is according to the nature of that on which it falls. The softened yields; the hardened flies. Some under discipline fall at His feet, but others fly in His face. Happy is the man who meets his trials like a Christian, with humility, faith, fortitude, and patience; happy is he who endures them without repining, complaining, and rebelling against God. He looks not at the rod but at the hand that wields it. Nor only at the hand, but at the heart that guides the hand. He says, "It is discipline. It is chastisement. It is my Father who strikes, and He never corrects for His own pleasure but for my profit, to make me a partaker of His holiness. I have prayed for deeper sanctification, He is answering my
prayer. I have desired brighter evidences for heaven, He is granting them. Shall I then complain? The cup which my heavenly Father giveth me, shall I not drink it?" Such a man who endures affliction proves that he is a true Christian and is blessed.
There is a shelter in the storm
God has prepared in gracious measure;
What foe assails? What fear alarms?
I have a Help, this wondrous treasure -
The Everlasting Arms!
God bless you dear reader.
Yours faithfully in the Saviour’s Service,
Dr SH Tow, Sr Pastor
