My dear readers,

1. Believe in the Lord your God” 2 Chr 20:20
(December 3 MORNING)
“SO SHALL YE BE ESTABLISHED ... SO SHALL YE PROSPER.” The proper object of faith is God in Christ, not God as the God of nature. In Christ He is gracious unto us, ever with us, ready to help us, and takes pleasure in us. He is our covenant God, all sufficient and ever propitious. We should believe in His word, which is true and faithful; in His presence, for He will never turn away from us; in His power, for nothing is too hard for Him; in His character, which He will never allow to be dishonoured; and in His faithfulness, which is like the mountains and abides for ever. We should believe in God though men rise up against us; though Satan trouble and distress us; though doubts and fears arise within us. We should believe in God for strength to perform our duty; deliverance out of every difficulty, and for courage in every conflict. Believing in God will produce contentment, zeal, and humility. Let us have faith from God: it is a gift which He will bestow : and let us have faith in God, it is an exercise which He requires and approves. If the Son of man were to come, would He find faith in our hearts?
Let us trust Thee evermore,
Every moment on Thee call,
For new life, new will, new power;
Let us trust Thee, Lord, for all;
May we nothing know beside
Jesus, and Him crucified!
2. “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children" Ephesians 5:1
(September 22 MORNING)
MANY CHRISTIANS FOLLOW AFTER THE WORLD. This is sin and fraught with danger. The Lord proposes Himself to us as our pattern, and He gives grace to everyone who desires to imitate Him. He exhorts us as His dear and tenderly beloved children, and in mildest tone proposes Himself for our imitation. Let us imitate the Lord in the present evil world, dealing justly, ever acting from holy principles, and by a righteous rule, adhering strictly to truth, for our God is the God of truth. Let us choose our company, being only familiar with them who are familiar with God, and doing good to all, especially unto them who are of the household of faith, for He causes His sun to shine on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. Let us imitate Him in the church, cultivating a spirit of love to all saints, notwithstanding their infirmities, exercising forbearance, and pity; being slow to anger and ready to forgive; accepting the will for the deed, being always ready to help those in trouble and distress. Let us imitate our God, for He commands us so to do; our relation to Him requires it: His peace is our reward.
This answers th' important question,
Whether thou art a real Christian;
Better than each golden dream,
Better far than lip expression,
Tow’ring notions, great profession;
This will prove your love to Him.
3. "Be still, and know that I am God" Ps 46:10
(July 25 MORNING)
CHRISTIAN, WAIT PATIENTLY ON THE LORD. The dispensations of divine providence are often very perplexing: our God has His way in the sea, and His path in the deep waters, and His footsteps are not known. Reason is confounded, and faith is staggered; but He hushes our fears, silences our cries, and bids us "Be still." We must lie before him, as the lamb at the shepherd's feet, as the child in the parent's arms. He will not harm us Himself, nor will He let others do so. We must learn that He is God, infinitely wise, invariably good, always sovereign. He does according to His will in heaven, on earth, in the sea, and in all deep places. None can stay His hand, or dispute His right to accomplish His will. Let us therefore keep silence before Him. He is our God, and we are His people; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures throughout all generations. Let us not murmur, for He is gracious; let us not complain, for He is a Father unto us; let us not fear, for He is faithful: but let us wait upon Him, submitting in all things to His will, and surrendering ourselves into His hands saying, "Here am I, do with me as seemeth Thee good." Let us be still for He is God.
When I can trust my all with God,
In trial's fearful hour
Bow, all resigned beneath His rod,
And bless His pard’ning power;
A joy springs up amidst distress,
A fountain in the wilderness.
4. “Be thou faithful unto death” Revelation 2:10
(November 6 EVENING)
“HE WAS CALLED FAITHFUL AND TRUE.” Our God is faithful to His people. He always keeps His word. He never disappoints their hope. He exhorts and encourages them to be faithful too. This was spoken to the Angel, or Messenger, or Pastor of the church; such should be faithful in preaching the word, in watching for souls, in suffering for Christ, and in seeking by all means to promote the prosperity, peace, and holiness of the flock. It includes the people. Believers should be faithful: faithful to the truth, holding it fast, striving for it, spreading it in every direction; faithful to conscience, listening to its dictates, observing its warnings, and obeying its demands; faithful to their profession, maintaining it, adorning it, and endeavouring to make it answer the end designed in it; faithful to God, believing His word, doing His will, and suffering in His cause; faithful to sinners, warning them of danger, giving them the word of life, and leading them to Jesus; faithful to saints, reproving their sins, soothing their sorrows, and supplying their needs. "Be thou faithful unto death." If it expose you to death, be faithful: a crown of life is the reward. Until removed by death, persevere; then hear the Master call, "Come up hither."
Saviour, help me by Thy power,
Withstand temptation’s deadly hour;
Give me fortitude and faith,
O make me faithful unto death!
God bless all readers.
Yours faithfully in the Saviour’s Service,
