"WHEN GOD MADE PROMISE TO ABRAHAM HE SWORE BY HIMSELF." Abraham was long tried, but he was richly rewarded. The Lord tried him by delaying to fulfil His promise. Satan tried him by temptations. Men tried him by jealousy, distrust, and opposition. Hagar tried him by condemning her mistress. Sarah tried him by her peevishness. All this he patiently endured. He did not question God's veracity, nor limit His power, nor doubt His faithfulness, nor grieve His heart. But he bowed to divine sovereignty, submitted to infinite wisdom, and was silent under delays, only awaiting the Lord's perfect time. And so, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise. God's promises cannot fail. Patient endurance shall not be disappointed; believing expectations shall be rewarded. Beloved, Abraham's conduct condemns a hasty spirit, reproves a murmuring one, commends a patient one, and encourages quiet submission to God's will. Remember, Abraham by patient waiting obtained the promise and became father of the faithful. Imitate him and you too will be richly blessed.
For Meditation:
My faithless fears, dear Lord, forgive;
I shall with sweet contentment live
On what Thy hand shall send;
I know Thou sendest but in love,
By gracious gifts Thy love to prove;
Praise to my heavenly Friend!
