Daily Remembrancer

July 2 Evening: "The night cometh" - Jn 9:4

NIGHT IS THE EMBLEM OF DEATH. There is generally something dreary and gloomy in the night, as there is in death. When death comes, all our opportunities of doing good in this world are over; let us therefore seize every opportunity to do good and improve the present. When death comes, our work should have been done; if not we regret. Let us therefore work while it is day; when death comes, we must bid our friends farewell; let us therefore treat them very warmly as those that must soon leave us. When death comes we shall go home to rest; our bodies return to the ground, and our souls fly to the presence of Jesus, and enjoy sweet repose. "The night cometh!" It is not far off; it may overtake us suddenly; we are warned to be ready. Let us endeavour as believers in Jesus, to redeem the time and be ready for the night, having our work all done, our limbs weary and worn, our appetite for heavenly things sharpened, and feeling glad to go home. Welcome! sweet sleep, and shortly, the morning of resurrection! Then shall we arise refreshed, renewed, glorious, immortal, in the presence of the King!

For Meditation:
O glorious hour! O bless'd abode!
Welcome the day I'll be with God;
And flesh and sin no more control
The inner longings of my soul.
