Daily Remembrancer

October 27 Evening: "Who remembered us in our low estate" - Ps 136:23

WHO REDEEMED US FROM OUR ENEMIES ... for His mercy endures for ever. Our state by nature was truly a low estate. We had no liberty, being the slaves of Satan; no ability, being dead in trespasses and sins; no honour, being allied only to enemies and rebels; no real pleasure, being tossed about by corrupt desires and lusts; no prospects except eternal woe; no profitable employment, for the fruit of our toil was death. Our nature was fearfully depraved; our condition truly deplorable; and our destiny most desperate. But in our low estate, the Lord remembered us; and it was because of it that He made His covenant, sent us His only Son, promised us His Holy Spirit, and gave us the glorious Gospel. To lift us out of our low estate, He exerted His divine power, and raised us by His love to union with Jesus. And He did all this out of pure mercy,which mercy endures forever. "Mercy there was great, and grace was free; pardon there was multiplied to me; there my burdened soul found liberty - at Calvary!" Mercy wrote our names in the Lamb's book of life, gave us the promises of the everlasting gospel, and pleads for us before the throne above, all because God remembered us in our low estate.

For Meditation:
All gracious God, Thy pitying eye
Viewed the low state in which we lie;
And as an act of sovereign grace,
Sent Thy salvation to our race.
