September 2 Morning: "Be not high-minded, but fear" - Rom 11:20

"WHAT IS MAN THAT THOU ART MINDFUL OF HIM?" We are but dust, frail creatures of the earth. The Apostle sounds a word of caution: "Be not high-minded." We are sometimes tempted to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to think; we forget that we are indebted to the free, sovereign, and amazing grace of God: for there is all the difference between us and the vilest of the vile. We should consider we are still weak and liable to fall; foolish and prone to wander; sinful and easily cast down; that Satan is deadly and determined; subtle and insinuating; malicious and scheming; plotting and persistent; that the world is alluring and ensnaring, treacherous and deceitful. These are a very present danger. A high-minded Christian is also unfruitful, and prone to fall. Therefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed! David fell, Peter fell, and thousands besides have fallen; and they exhort us with groans and tears, "Be not high-minded, but fear. Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." Let us cultivate humility of mind and habitual dependence upon God: so shall we be safe, holy, and happy.

For Meditation:
Jesus, if Thou withdraw Thy hand,
That moment sees me fall;
O may I ne'er on self depend,
But look to Thee for all:
Lead me into Thy righteous ways,
Make plain my path by Thy good grace.
