OUR GOD IS THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT. He comforts us in all our tribulation, in our sorrows and mourning. The Lord's people are all mourners; grace makes them mourn over sins committed, depravity discovered, comforts forfeited and lost. They mourn over the sins of others, the state of the church, and for the salvation of relatives and friends. We mourn after Jesus when we are separated from His love, and over Him for suffering on our behalf. But He has declared, "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted." Jesus Himself is anointed and appointed to be our Comforter; His is the tongue of the learned, that He may speak a word in season to them that are weary. He comforts us by pardoning our sins, subduing our iniquities, restoring the joy of our salvation, employing us in His service, and making us profitable for Him. He comforts us by His word, His servants, and His Spirit. Admire the wisdom of God in the person appointed; the love of God in the work to which He is appointed; and the faithfulness of God in the perpetuity of His office. He ever lives, and lives to comfort us, and to make intercession for us.
For Meditation:
Now in the Lord will I be glad,
And happy in His love;
Jesus my joy, Thou Son of God
My great salvation prove:
My Saviour will my comfort be,
For now and all eternity.
