EVERY CHRISTIAN SHOULD GROW. "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby." Our knowledge of God is imperfect: we know but in part. The means of knowledge are in our hands, but we have not the zeal to use them to advantage. God must be better known if He is to be better loved and trusted. Unless we know Him well, how can we adore His perfections, reverence His majesty, value His favour, fear His frown, or delight to do His commandments? For this purpose, Paul prayed for the Colossians that they might increase in the knowledge of God. And how can we know Him more if we do not read His works, observe His providence, and study His word. But it is in Jesus that God reveals Himself most clearly and most fully. Therefore our Lord says, "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father." Do you know God at all? You did not once, now you do: therefore be thankful. But your knowledge is still imperfect, therefore seek to increase it. Jesus said, "This is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent." He that has an extensive knowledge of God in Jesus is a truly happy man.
For Meditation:
Shine, mighty God, more brightly shine,
On this benighted heart of mine;
And let Thy glories once concealed,
Be in the Saviour's face revealed.
