"THE LORD HATH DONE GREAT THINGS FOR THEM." Indeed the Lord has done great things for us whereof we are glad: for our nation, in delivering it from paganism and idolatry, and in bestowing such great blessings upon it, so that it may well be the wonder and envy of the world; for His church, in redeeming it by the sufferings and death of His beloved Son; in quickening, converting, and sanctifying its members; in gathering them together from the ends of the earth, in providing for all their wants, watching over their persons, and keeping them by His power through faith unto salvation; for our souls, delivering us from the power of darkness and translating us into the kingdom of His dear Son. Thank the Lord for pardoning all our sins through His blood, and justifying our persons in His righteousness, working faith in our hearts, giving us good hope through grace, making us the temples of His Holy Spirit, conquering all our foes and subduing within us our iniquities. What hath God wrought? Wonders. For whom hath God wrought? Sinners. Why hath God wrought? That He might be glorified. Beloved, the past should encourage us in prospect of the future; what He has done is a pledge of what He will yet do for us. Bless the Lord, O my soul!
For Meditation:
What sweeter pledge could God bestow
Of help in every scene of woe,
Than grace already given;
But unbelief, that hateful thing,
Oft makes me sigh when I should sing
Of confidence in heaven.
