"I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD." Apart from Jesus, man has no light. England was once shrouded in the darkness of paganism, but this was dispelled by the introduction of the gospel. Then it fell under the oppression of Rome until God sent the Reformation. Today dark clouds of superstition and imagery again hang over England and Europe (and the world), but the light of God nevertheless shines. It shines from the Bible, the written word, and from faithful pulpits throughout the country. It shines into our hearts to discover our true position. By the same light we understand the way of life and salvation, the source of true joy, the principle of filial obedience. It shines around us now, brightly, clearly, and constantly. It shines to display God's free grace, to enable us to walk daily in comfort of the Scriptures, to work with pleasure under God, to fight God's battles with confidence. Does the true light now shine for you? Then let us be thankful that we are no more as the multitudes still sitting in darkness under the shadow of death. Let us improve our gospel opportunity, walking in the light as God is in the light, and living in daily fellowship with Him. Let us shine the light in every direction that some benighted soul may flee the darkness and come into God's light.
For Meditation:
O to rescue men from ruin,
Let the light within us shine;
Sinners to the Saviour guiding,
By God's gospel light divine.
