"HEAR, O LORD, AND HAVE MERCY UPON ME." Why? "To the end that my glory may sing to Thee ... I will give thanks unto Thee forever." Most appropriate is this prayer for our daily need. The Lord can and will help us. He says, "Fear not, I will help thee." But God's promises should be turned into personal prayers: and we never pray so spiritually as when we can say, "Lord, do as Thou hast said. Be it unto me according to Thy word." Let us then earnestly cry unto our God this night, "Lord, be Thou my helper." I see many fall; I too shall fall except Thou hold me up. I am weak, exposed to temptation. My heart is deceitful, my enemies too strong for me. I cannot trust in man. I dare not trust myself. The grace I have received will not keep me without Thee. "Lord, be Thou my helper." In every duty, in every conflict, in every trial, in every effort to promote the Lord's cause, in every season of the year: "Lord, be thou my helper." Every hour we live, this short and inspired prayer is appropriate. May it flow from our hearts, be often on our lips, and obtain the Father's favour. For if the Lord help us, there is no duty which we cannot perform, no foe which we cannot overcome, no difficulty which we cannot surmount. With God, all things are possible; even painful things will be made pleasant, if we have the Lord as our helper.
For Meditation:
Weak and helpless, Lord, I am,
On Thee alone can I depend;
O let me not be put to shame,
Be Thou my helper to the end.
