GOD'S MERCY IS THE REMEDY FOR MAN'S MISERY. Our sin and misery cannot be as great as God's mercy. Our sufferings are many, but God's mercy is a sufficient antidote for all. Mercy is the wealth of God which He freely bestows upon His people. It is the sympathy of God which He displays towards His afflicted children. By that He is affected with a sense of our sufferings; as it is written of His people of old, "In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them: and he bore them, and carried them all the days of old." The mercy of God is infinite. It flows through Jesus. It is glorified in soothing our sorrows, supplying our wants, pardoning our sins, relieving our distresses, and restoring us from all our wanderings. Beloved, God is rich in mercy tonight. He has mercy for you, just that mercy which you need. He says, "I will have mercy, and not sacrifice." Believe His promise. Plead for mercy at His throne. Expect Him to glorify His mercy in you. You need no other recommendation than your misery; no greater encouragement than this, "He is rich in mercy, rich unto all that call upon him."
For Meditation:
High as the heav'n o'er earth extends,
His mercy all our sins transcends;
Far as the east from western climes,
He casts the guilt of all our crimes.
