July 14 Morning: "My people doth not consider" - Isa 1:3

GOD HAS A COMPLAINT AGAINST HIS OWN PEOPLE. It is a complaint preferred against us by our infinitely gracious God; let us attend to it this morning. What should we consider? Surely, how great things the Lord has done for us: how He has delivered our souls from death, our eyes from tears, and our feet from falling, that we may walk before God in the land of the living. How God provides for all His creatures, even the meanest, and therefore He will certainly provide for us, being engaged to do so as our Creator, covenant God, and gracious Father. He is the supreme and universal Governor, arranging, managing, and directing every event, so that accidents can never happen, chance can have no place, but all is directed by infinite wisdom and omnipotent love. Why do we not consider? Because our hearts are fickle, false, and worldly; our minds are influenced by unspiritual and deceptive notions; and we endeavour to walk by sight instead of by faith. What are the consequences of our not considering? Our God is dishonoured and displeased; our souls are deceived and misled; and Satan gains an advantage over us. Why, then, do we not consider?

For Meditation:
Jesus, mighty to renew,
Work in me to will and do;
Stem my nature's downward slide,
Slay my vile self-righteous pride!
All Thy pow'r in me be shown,
Make anew my heart of stone!
