August 2 Evening: "The last enemy" - 1 Cor 15:26

IN CHRIST DEATH IS NO LONGER KING OF TERRORS. The Christian has many enemies, but through grace he shall overcome them all. "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death." Death is an enemy to kingdoms, cutting down princes, patriots, and the powerful. It is an enemy to congregations, removing without mercy the active, the benevolent, and the unprofitable hearer alike. It is an enemy to churches, robbing them of their officers, their teachers, the youthful, the devoted, and the most zealous members. It is an enemy to families, snatching away the father, the husband, the wife, the offspring. It is an enemy to individuals, saints and sinners alike. It was an enemy to our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the last enemy in sequential order: Satan, then sin, then death. It is the last in its attack: disease, age, death. It is the last enemy to be destroyed, for God has decreed it, and Jesus is coming to execute the judgment determined. But even now the saints may defy its power, withstand its attack, rejoice in its arms, and spring from its grasp to everlasting glory, because our Lord has conqured death for us.

For Meditation:
O Lord! that I may thus depart,
Thy joys to share, Thy face to see;
Impress Thine image on my heart,
And teach me how to walk with Thee.
