"AS POOR YET MAKING MANY RICH." These are the words of one who had suffered the loss of all things that he might win Christ. The Lord's family are generally poor; men may look on them as having nothing valuable or able to make them happy. But in reality they possess all things because God is theirs. Our God has said, "I am your inheritance," and we reply, "Thou art our portion, O Lord." His eternity is the assurance of our happiness; His unchangeableness the rock of our rest; His omnipotence our impregnable defence; His faithfulness our daily security; His mercies, our overflowing wealth; His omniscience our unerring guide; His wisdom our infallible counsellor; His justice our fair avenger; His omnipresence our delightful company; His holiness our fountain of sanctifying grace; His all sufficiency our rich inheritance; and His infinity our unbounded glory. This is the blessedness of God's people: they have Him for their God, and all His perfections combine to make them blessed. Love the Lord O my soul! Live upon Him! Glorify God in the day of visitation! Make Him your portion and everlasting delight!
For Meditation:
To us the privilege is giv'n
To be the sons and heirs of heav'n;
Sons of the God who reigns on high,
And heirs of joys beyond the sky:
O may our conduct ever prove
Our filial piety and love.
