1 Corinthians 3:1-4
Hebrews 5:12-14
"For ye are yet carnal…"
ARE YOU A MATURE CHRISTIAN?
There is a saying that goes, "Ignorance is bliss." Some professing Christians have applied this thinking into their spiritual lives. They reason within themselves that it is alright to know little of the Bible, because the more they know, the more they have to be responsible to obey. As a result of this twisted logic, the lives of these professing Christians seem no different from that of non-Christians. They are living in carnality like the men of the world.
The Corinthian believers were prime examples of those who were deficient in their spiritual growth. The picture Paul used was that of an infant. In the first few months, the baby could only drink milk. As the child grew, he would slowly progress to solid food. Finally, when he developed teeth, he would be able to eat meat. The parents would be most worried if their child could not progress to eat solid food!
Alas, the Corinthian Christians were like babies that did not grow. They were still stuck in the milk-drinking stage. That ought not to be since they had received Christ a few years earlier. However, since the Corinthian Christians were so deficient in spiritual understanding, the Apostle Paul was not able to discuss the "meaty" doctrines of God’s Word. They were still not ready to handle the deep things of the Holy Scriptures. Paul still had to teach them the fundamentals of the Christian faith. Should Paul not be concerned for them?
Dearly beloved, every Christian ought to mature in the faith, and bear much fruit for the Lord Jesus Christ. "But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty" (Matt 13:23). How is your spiritual growth? Have you grown in understanding and practical wisdom of the Bible since you first believed in Christ?
THOUGHT: How well do I know God’s Word?
PRAYER: Lord, lead me to higher ground.
