ENSLAVED BY SMARTPHONES? (II)

There is also a disturbing trend among youths to engage in cooperative phone activities in the name of "phone fellowship." What exactly is fellowship? The Bible’s definition of fellowship describes a common sharing, care and relationship that is made possible only in Christ and in His truth. "That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ" (1 John 1:3). "If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin" (1 John 1:6-7). How many of such "phone fellowship" activities actually promote Christ and His Word? Do they involve gross violence or magic? Let us not deceive ourselves. Calling these activities "phone fellowship" is but a cover-up for addiction and sin.

Smartphones can also be a distraction during worship service. Today, Bibles are easily downloaded into smartphones. Many are thus reading the Bible from their phones during worship services. As a result, some may be distracted by incoming emails, messages or notifications on their phones. They may also distract others by the use of their smartphones. We are to worship God in the beauty of holiness (Ps 29:2) with undivided attention. When we are distracted by emails, websites and messages, we are certainly not worshipping God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). Remove the smartphone, put it into a bag, and use a proper physical Bible.

Dear readers, how are you using your smartphone? It can be a bane or a boon. Do not be enslaved by your smartphone. Use it wisely for the glory of God. "All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any" (1 Cor 6:12).

THOUGHT: I must worship God with undivided attention.
PRAYER: Lord, help me to be wholly consecrated unto Thee.
