A WORD TO THE FATHERS

Paul now turned his attention towards the fathers in the Corinthian church. In the Roman times, fathers served as guardians to their daughters. The authority to give their daughters in marriage rested in their hands. Paul had this advice for them: "If your daughter is of age, and has a desire to be married, do not stop her from marrying. You have not sinned against the Lord. On the other hand, if your daughter is able to remain single, do not rush to give her hand in marriage. Let her remain single so that she will not be distracted in the service of the Lord." Paul was thus exhorting fathers to fulfil their responsibility in making sure that their daughters abide in the calling which God had called them to.

Why then is it better for the father not to give his daughter to marriage? Calvin explained: "The sum of the whole discussion amounts to this — that celibacy is better than marriage, because it has more liberty, so that persons can serve God with greater freedom; but at the same time, that no necessity ought to be imposed, so as to make it unlawful for individuals to marry, if they think proper; and farther, that marriage itself is a remedy appointed by God for our infirmity, which all ought to use that are not endowed with the gift of continency."

On another note, it is wise for young men and women looking for a spouse to seek the advice of their parents. Not only do parents (having gone through various life experiences) have the duty to ensure the best for their children, they can often see things which their children cannot perceive. True love involves more than just emotions. It also involves a mind that is renewed and girded by the Holy Scriptures. Pray and think carefully before entering into marriage. Make sure it is God’s will before you proceed. Ask if you are prepared for the challenges of married life. Let not your marriage be founded on infatuation, but on true love that knows God’s will.

THOUGHT: Godly parents will know what is best for their children.
PRAYER: Lord, grant us godly families in our churches.
