FELLOWSHIP AND TRUTH

Brethren living in fellowship are always to tell the truth to one another. It is not possible for one to claim to have fellowship with God and yet be walking in darkness. The claim can only be a lie. Christians can trust one another and build meaningful fellowship when they are truthful to one another.

A good example of Christian fellowship is the friendship between David and Jonathan in the Old Testament. They entered into a covenant of friendship that even death could not break. Jonathan was committed to protect David. After his death, David eulogised Jonathan saying that their love “was wonderful, passing the love of women” (2 Sam 1:26). When David became king, he sought Jonathan’s kin to show kindness to them for his friend’s sake. The measure of commitment to Christian fellowship is bound by love without hypocrisy.

The Greek word for fellowship is koinonia and the word for love is agape. There are other words that are used to express the oneness that Christians are required to have. However, above these, truth must be in the forefront. When the Scriptures speak of separation from unbelievers, truth is the central factor. Truth brings believers together and meaningful Christian fellowship is built on that foundation.

Telling the truth is part of God’s moral law. “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour” (Exod 20:16). This is the assertion of the Ninth Commandment. Telling the truth is one of the qualities of a true friend and a worthy neighbour. Always tell the truth.

THOUGHT: Build my fellowship on the foundation of truth.
PRAYER: Lord, deliver me from the temptation to lie.
