Proverbs 22:6
“Train up a child in the way he should go:
and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
MESSAGE TO LITTLE CHILDREN
John here was addressing a mixed age group of Christians. There were little children, youths and adults. The Lord Jesus did not exclude the children from His audience. Even when some adults wanted them to be kept away, He insisted that they be allowed to come to Him. They were able to understand the message of the gospel, and they learnt. Children are an important class in any Christian community.
John said that he wrote to the children because their sins were forgiven for His name’s sake. It was important for them to know that they were sinners and the gift of God’s grace reached out to them as well. They were equally saved as the adults. The second message to the children was that they had known the Father. Simple theology is clearly expressed in the first question in the Introduction to the Shorter Catechism for children: “Qn: Who made you? Ans: God made me.” This is a truth that a professor of science with evolutionist persuasion cannot acknowledge. The children know, and need to know more, about the Father. Thus the need to teach them.
The recognition of children by Christ and the Apostles has inspired ministries like the Sunday school movement and also the writing of hymns for children. These have gone a long way in upholding the truth. Little children are given direction on how to grow up in the faith and to follow the ways of the Lord in their lives. They have known the Father because they have been introduced to Him at an early age.
The hymn “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world” carries an important message in view of the atrocities meted out on them, for example by Pharaoh at the time of Moses’ birth and by King Herod at the birth of Jesus. Both baby Moses and baby Jesus were targets in those killings. Look at what they became as adults. What is the hope for our children today?
THOUGHT: All children are precious in God’s sight.
PRAYER: Lord, may our children learn Thy Word, and be saved.
