THE COMING OF ANTICHRIST
The love of the world is in opposition to Christ. The coming of the Antichrist was expected in John’s time. He asserted that many antichrists had already come and that it was “the last time” (1 John 2:18). The antichrists deny both the Father and the Son.
In the days of Jesus, there was much opposition from the Jewish leaders. John was one of the original disciples of Christ and a prominent Apostle. He saw how the Lord had transformed the lives of believers through the Gospel. He gave this warning in the text because of his many years of experience. Earlier he talked about the world in reference to the community of sinful humanity that possessed a spirit of rebellion against God. Their opposition to God made them value those things which were contrary to God’s will. This is the antichrist’s spirit at work.
Satan is the antichrist himself and he amplifies the attractions of the world and leads a system that opposes God. The many antichrists that the Apostle mentioned are Satan’s agents. They come in the form of human beings. Satan is also called “the prince of this world” (John 12:31). He reigns in the world and seeks to win many to his side at all times. The tragic consequences of the love of the world come in many different forms. Satan makes people to turn away from the Lord’s work and to influence others as well. He alienates them from God and brings in corrupting sins. He also amplifies the deception of false teachers. All these are his wiles to kill and to destroy.
The only way to overcome the Antichrist is to have greater love for the Father as the Apostle John taught. Seek to please God every day in everything and strive for spiritual growth. Growth comes through prayer and reading of God’s Word as well as in witnessing for Christ. You do not need to fall prey to the temptations of the world.
THOUGHT: Putting on God’s armour defeats the Antichrist.
