ARROGANT MEN

The Scripture continues with a description of those evil men who rejected the Gospel and endeavoured to lead God’s people away from the truth. Of all those reserved for final condemnation, these false teachers were especially singled out. They despised not only the authority of the church, but also the very Lord of all creation (2 Pet 2:10). Jude described the men of Sodom and Gomorrah in the same manner (Jude 7-9). Rebelling against the Word of God, these men eventually became slaves to the most twisted sins. Such false teachers had no respect for anyone or anything. Even angels, far more powerful beings than mere men, show a respect that these men do not know (2 Pet 2:11).
Although arising from within the church, these teachers were so utterly lacking in faith that they blasphemed anything they did not understand. We must remember that God does not choose to reveal all knowledge. Some things are, in His perfect plan, kept secret (Deut 29:29). The date of the Lord’s return is one of these secret things. The false teachers were numbered among those who ridiculed the Lord’s return (2 Pet 3:3-4). We were shocked to read a book some time ago written by a high official of the Church of England scoffing at the Lord’s return as well as the virgin birth and other major Christian truths. We waited in vain for that once great church body to expel the heretic. But there was complete silence concerning the matter. Scripture warns the church against this type of false teacher.
According to the Scripture, such apostates are no better than wild animals led only by their senses. They bring great spiritual destruction, leading the unwary astray. But their judgment is already prepared and they will perish in their sins (2 Pet 2:12). The church must be constantly on its guard against any teacher who does not stand fully for the truth as presented in the Holy Scriptures and as taught by the believing church down through the centuries.
