PHILEMON
The next important personality is Philemon. He was one of Paul’s disciples during his ministry in Ephesus. The Apostle was close to him, as seen in the intimate letter Paul wrote to him. Philemon was known for his hospitality and was a leader in the church at Colosse. It is believed that the church there gathered in his home for worship each Lord’s Day. His wife, Apphia, and their son, Archippus, were also devoted to the ministry, serving alongside Epaphras in the work of the Gospel.
Brethren, when others hear our names, will they think of God’s love? Will they remember our faith in the Lord? Will they see Christ in us when they meet us and fellowship with us? Let us earnestly desire to be living examples of our Lord and Saviour, who is full of grace and mercy. As born-again children of God, we are indwelt by the Spirit, who enables us to do what pleases Him. The Spirit reminds us of God’s truth so that we may live godly lives, manifesting Christlikeness in all we do.
A fellow labourer is essential in the work of the ministry. A Christian is not an island, nor a lone ranger, nor a one-man show. He needs companions to labour with him. A fellow soldier is even more needful in our daily battle against the enemy and the world. We need someone to lift us when we are wounded, to strengthen us when we faint. Above all, we need dearly beloved brethren whose faith, hope and love are as fervent as our own; those who remind us of Christ’s promises, bear our burdens, and are willing even to suffer with us for His sake.
Brethren, are we like Philemon? Stedfast, trustworthy and commended by the Apostle? Paul had such confidence in Philemon’s character that he entrusted him to mediate on behalf of Onesimus. Can the same be said of us?
“Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord. Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say” (Philem 1:20-21).
THOUGHT: Am I truly a fellow labourer and soldier to my brethren?
PRAYER: Father, give me the heart’s desire to co-labour with others in Thy work.
