Luke’s Gospel is the longest book in the New Testament. It forms the first part of a two-volume work, the second being the Book of Acts. Though the writer does not name himself, strong evidence points to Luke, the physician who accompanied Paul from his second missionary journey onward. Luke openly declared that he relied on eyewitness testimonies to record the life of Jesus, showing that he was not himself an eyewitness. The early church fathers testified that Paul was among those eyewitnesses, and Luke, being Paul’s close companion, carefully preserved what he learned.
Luke was honest in his approach. As God’s chosen writer of the third Gospel, he used his God-given skill as a physician to record with precision the life of our Lord, presenting Him as both fully man and fully God. His careful research and orderly account strengthened the faith of Gentile believers, affirming that Jesus, in His perfect divine nature, is also truly human, man’s perfect representative and substitute.
Luke’s purpose was to set forth an orderly declaration of the life of Christ. His narrative flows from Jesus’ birth and childhood, through His ministry in Galilee, and climaxes with His journey to Jerusalem for the work of redemption. Luke also recorded the appearances of Jesus after His resurrection, confirming the reality of His victory over death.
The Lord gives each of us talents and abilities to be used in His service. Like Luke, we must be thankful for these gifts and dedicate them to glorify our Saviour. Every believer has the privilege of participating in the ministry of bringing souls to Christ. We must not wait passively for others to call us; instead, we must pray for the Lord to open doors of service and be ready to walk through them. Passion for Christ compels us to offer back to Him that which He has entrusted to us.
THOUGHT: Am I truly desiring to serve my Saviour with the gifts He has given me?
PRAYER: Father, help me to actively fulfil my part in the ministry where Thou hast placed me.
