AQUILA AND PRISCILLA: TENTMAKERS
Another two heroes are Aquila, a Jewish Christian, and his wife Priscilla. This Jewish couple first met Paul in Corinth. Scripture tells us that Paul stayed with them because they shared the same trade: “for by their occupation they were tentmakers” (Acts 18:3). They had come from Italy after being expelled during the reign of Emperor Claudius, yet even in displacement, they faithfully served the Lord.
Their contribution to the ministry was exemplary. When Apollos, an eloquent man from Alexandria, came to Ephesus, he was mighty in the Scriptures but knew only the baptism of John. Aquila and Priscilla, with loving care, took him aside privately and explained the way of God more perfectly to him. Their gentle correction helped equip Apollos to boldly proclaim Christ, showing us the importance of mature believers who can guide others with wisdom and grace.
How greatly the church today needs Christians like Aquila and Priscilla, those who correct with tenderness, not harshness; who teach with patience, not pride. Their example stands in contrast to worldly attitudes of scolding, belittling or bullying. Yet their honesty was uncompromising. They did not sugar-coat or dilute the truth. They taught the Word of God faithfully, holding to it as inerrant and infallible.
Read Paul’s commendation of them in Romans 16:3-4. Aquila and Priscilla risked their lives for the Gospel, living with the conviction that heaven was their true home. For them, to live was to serve Christ, and to die was to be with Him forever.
Their testimony calls us to the same devotion: to build up others in the faith, to risk comfort and even life for the sake of the Gospel, and to live with eternity in view.
THOUGHT: Am I ready to face death for the sake of Christ, living each day with eternity in mind?
PRAYER: Father, grant me joy in building up others for Thee while living in the blessed anticipation of the return of the Lord Jesus. May my life reflect the courage and devotion of Aquila and Priscilla, wholly given to Thy service.
