Proverbs 3:12
GOD DISCIPLINES HIS BELOVED
Steven slammed the front door and threw his bag on the sofa. His mother looked up from the book she was reading. "Steven, that was quite an entrance," she said. "Sorry, Mom," Steven replied as he dropped into a chair, "but I had a terrible day at school. Mrs. Wan got mad at us guys, including me!"
Mom closed her book. "Really? She’s your favorite teacher. Why?" "Oh, she got upset just because we left our meal trays on the table," Steven mumbled. "She made us go back in and help clean up in the cafeteria during recess. It’s not fair!"
"But what if everyone left their trays too?" Mom asked. "It would be quite a mess for the cafeteria workers to clean up, wouldn’t it?" "I know, but . . . other kids do leave them sometimes," protested Steven. "I never saw them get into trouble." He sighed. "I always thought Mrs. Wan liked me, but I guess not or she wouldn’t get so mad. She looked right at me when she said we all had to go back in and clean up." Mom thought for a minute. She said,
"Steven, do you remember when your dad got upset with me because I’d left the house keys in the front door all night? He wasn’t upset with me because he was angry, but because he loves us and wants us to stay safe. He said I needed to be more careful about checking the keys after that."
Steven remembered, but he still frowned. "Well, I’m sure Mrs. Wan wasn’t afraid we wouldn’t be safe!" he said. "No, but I do think she got upset because she cares about you and the other kids," Mom replied. "She knows that doing the wrong thing brings trouble, and learning to do the right thing brings happiness." Steven couldn’t contradict what Mom said. She smiled. "If we disobey God," Mom added, "He sometimes sends people to rebuke us because He loves us and wants us to be Christians who obey His words. He disciplines us, but not because He wants to hurt us. He does it out of love."
After a minute, Steven jumped up. "Tomorrow I’ll apologize to Mrs. Wan," he declared. "And I’m going to be careful to take care of my tray after this."
Thought: Do you get angry or hurt when you’re punished? Or do you realise that if others let you keep doing something that’s wrong, they aren’t really showing love to you?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I learn that when You discipline us, it is becauseYou love us and want the best for us. Much like what good parents do, too. They don’t want their children to keep doing wrong things, so they punish them. Help me to listen to what my parents and others in authority tell me, and to obey them. Above all, help me listen to what Scriptures say and obey! This I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
