WHO DO YOU TRUST?

Paul proceeded to use the Old Testament to illustrate the superiority of God’s wisdom over the world’s wisdom. He quoted Isaiah 29:14, "Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid."

The LORD was directing His word towards the kingdom of Judah. At that time, Judah was besieged by the superpower Assyria. The LORD called for Judah to trust fully in Him for deliverance. Instead, rebellious Judah turned to Egypt for help, with disastrous consequences. Rabshakeh was able to tempt Israel with these words, "Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him" (2 Kings 18:21). The wisdom of wise men proved to be foolishness. Thankfully, the LORD was merciful towards Judah. Though Egypt abandoned Judah, the LORD delivered her by slaying 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night. The wisdom and power of God are indeed far superior to man’s.

It is thus tragic that man would rather trust in the arm of flesh for salvation. The world’s religions teach that man can work his way to heaven. However, the Bible declares that the way to heaven is only through the Lord Jesus Christ. Salvation is fully by the grace of God. All man needs to do is to trust in the Lord for deliverance, and not to trust in his own wisdom.

Dearly beloved, who do you trust? Christians must depend on God totally in all things. "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (Prov 3:5-6).

THOUGHT: Simply trusting Jesus every day.
PRAYER: Thou art my wisdom and guide, O Lord.
