CLEAR SPIRITUAL SIGHT
Even though the Holy Spirit is our Teacher and Guide, God has seen fit that we do not have perfect spiritual knowledge immediately. Every believer must go through a period of maturation. As he continues to grow, his understanding of spiritual things will increase more and more.
A believer’s journey to clear spiritual sight is vividly illustrated in the miracle of the blind man who was healed in stages (Mark 8:22-26). The message of this miracle was intended for the disciples since it was done outside of the town with only the disciples as witnesses. Initially, the man had no sight. Then, his sight was fuzzy. He could see men walking like trees. In the end, Jesus restored his sight to full clarity and brilliance.
Jesus purposefully did the healing in two stages to drive home a point. Before this miracle, Jesus told His disciples to take heed, and to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the scribes, and of the leaven of Herod (Mark 8:15). The disciples thought that Jesus was referring to a lack of bread. Having witnessed the feeding of the 5,000 and the 4,000, the disciples should know that the lack of physical food was never an issue. Jesus could easily provide bread whenever they needed. Was there not excess bread left after both miracles? Jesus was not referring to physical bread, but to the religious hypocrisy of the scribes and the Pharisees. The disciples might have seen the miracles. They might have touched the bread. They might even have heard Jesus talking and teaching with their own ears. And yet they did not understand! This was just like the blind man who saw men as trees walking. It was fuzzy spiritual sight.
Nevertheless, with the passage of time, the disciples grew in spiritual maturity. With spiritual growth comes clearer spiritual sight. It is important that we grow in spiritual maturity.
THOUGHT: Spiritual discernment is critical in this deceitful world.
PRAYER: Lord, help me to understand Thy Word.
