SEEKING TO BE MARRIED?

One of the common stresses singles face is the pressure to get married. As they see their various friends getting married through the years, they may wonder when it will be their turn and may feel burdened also to find a life partner.

Paul addressed the singles ("virgins") in his discussion in 1 Corinthians 7:25-28. In the earlier verses, Paul taught that a Christian must always seek to abide in the calling in which he was called. Those who are single must not be anxious to get married. While it is not a sin for a person to get married, he must make sure that it is indeed God’s call and timing for him to pursue marriage before proceeding (1 Cor 7:27-28).

As one who was given grace by God to remain single, and as one who had been faithful to his call of singlehood and apostleship, Paul urged those who are single to consider remaining in their state. Firstly, singlehood is reasonable in the light of the "present distress." The term "distress" (anagkē) refers to a state of calamity with the idea of violence and pressure. Believers living in a world that hates Christ must expect much persecution and suffering. If a person is married, he would have to worry not only about his own safety but also that of his wife and children. The pressure upon him would be much greater compared to one who is single.

The second reason to remain single would be the "trouble in the flesh" (1 Cor 7:28) a married person would face. This would refer to the various difficulties and challenges that come with married life (1 Cor 7:33). Once a person is married, he will have additional obligations and responsibilities: to his spouse, to his children, and also to his parents-in-law. A person who seeks to get married must be spiritually prepared and mature to handle such issues. Otherwise, please remain single!

THOUGHT: God’s calling for me is always the best.
PRAYER: Lord, help me to abide in Thy call and timing.
