THE SPIRIT LEADING

No greater leader has the world seen than Moses the servant of God. Yet it is recorded that “Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth” (Num 12:3). “And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend…” (Exod 33:11). What a man, Moses! What honour adorned this “very meek” man. Do you want to know the secret of his greatness?

Moses did not act and move by his natural impulse or native intelligence. The Lord led him. Moses walked with the Lord and pleased the Lord, so that He could speak to him as a friend “face to face.” Who was He who spoke “face to face” with Moses? He was none other than God the Holy Spirit – the Comforter! Isaiah gave us a valuable insight into this great man’s life: “Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him? That led them by the right hand of Moses with his glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make himself an everlasting name? … As a beast goeth down into the valley, the Spirit of the LORD caused him to rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name” (Isa 63:11, 12, 14).

Of the Spirit’s leading spoken in Romans 8:14 Matthew Henry has a helpful comment: “Led by the Spirit of God as a scholar in his learning is led by his tutor, as a traveller in his journey is led by his guide, as a soldier in his engagements is led by his captain.” In these instances we see the eternal element. But there is also the vital internal element of the Spirit’s leading. David touched on this aspect when he prayed, “Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes … Give me understanding…. Make me to go in the path of thy commandments … Incline my heart unto thy testimonies…” (Ps 119:33-36).

The Holy Spirit bends our will and moulds our heart to be subject to His impulses. Thus He leads His children along the perfect path.

THOUGHT: “All the way my Saviour leads me, what have I to ask beside?”
PRAYER: Lead me in Thy truth, and teach me, for Thou art the God of my salvation.
