THE SPIRIT’S WORK IN REGENERATION

The Spirit’s work in regeneration is altogether beyond the understanding of the man of the world. To him it makes no sense. “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Cor 2:14). Pray then for Holy Spirit illumination and discernment!

(a) The Spirit’s Work is a Mystery. Our Lord likens it to the wind, moving about unseen. No man can tell whence it comes or where it goes. “So is every one that is born of the Spirit” (John 3:8). The Spirit does His work invisibly, but the effects are clearly seen and heard – like the wind!

(b) The Spirit’s Work is Irresistible. When the wind gathers momentum even ocean-going vessels are tossed about and cast on the shore. So the Holy Spirit works irresistibly and powerfully in changing lives and transforming characters – effects clearly seen and heard!

(c) The Spirit’s Work is Instantaneous. We may liken it to conception. In a moment of time, a baby is conceived, a new life comes into being. So it is with regeneration. In an instant, the Spirit imparts new life and that person is born again.

A person is either regenerated or he is not.

(d) The Spirit’s Work is Permanent. Once God’s Spirit has implanted His life in you, you are born again. You have become a child of God. To you, our Lord Jesus says, “And I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand and no man is able to pluck you out of my Father’s hand” (John 10:28-29).

This means: “Once saved, always saved”!

THOUGHT: If I am a child of God, need I doubt my salvation?
PRAYER: Lord, hold me in Thy almighty hand. Amen.
