Ephesians 1:13-14
God’s Word is soul food.
SEALED BY THE SPIRIT (II)
In the normal course of life today, almost everything of value can be insured against loss: houses, vehicles, estates, precious stones, rare works of art, musicians’ hands, life and health, and so on. The clamour is for the assurance of material preservation of some treasured possession for the future. In the spiritual realm, assurance of our most treasured inheritance is equally relevant and infinitely more important.
Our salvation in Christ gives us an inheritance and possession precious beyond words. This is promised to us in God’s Word which we have accepted by faith. Faith is believing what God says and taking God at His Word. At times our faith seems so weak and doubts begin to assail. It may be the pressure of modern living, the deceitful snare of riches, the temptations of the flesh – oh, so many of Satan’s wiles that come our way. A young believer or even a mature Christian under stress may wonder, “Is my faith genuine? Are God’s promises real? Is it worth going on with Christ?”
To express the problem in today’s language, we want to know: “Is our salvation package insured? What assurance is there that in the end we shall receive the promised inheritance?” A reasonable question deserves a reasonable answer! The answer is in Ephesians 1:13-14. We shall paraphrase it for easier understanding:
(a) you trusted in Christ after you heard the Word of truth,
(b) you believed, and
(c) you were sealed with the Holy Spirit.
This salvation process of “hearing the Gospel, believing, sealing by the Spirit” is absolutely assured. It is foolproof, INFALLIBLE! Call it an “insurance policy” if that will make some happy. Your salvation is signed and sealed by the GREAT UNDERWRITER OF OUR SOULS in His own blood. The Spirit of Promise, now residing in your heart, Himself assures you: “Doubt not. The Word is true. The Gospel promise is sure.”
THOUGHT: Have I been sealed by the Spirit of Promise?
PRAYER: Lord, I believe. Help Thou my unbelief.
