“… one day is with the Lord
as a thousand years …”

Daniel’s urgent burden was the restoration of the exiled nation and the rebuilding of the holy city Jerusalem. Their desolate condition was a great sadness in his heart. How long, O Lord, will it be before Thou wilt restore Thy people and city, and redeem the glory of Thy name?

Daniel’s petition to God was for nation and city. God’s message was directly in answer to his petition. Daniel 9:24 summarises God’s answer which we rephrase below:

God has determined that in seventy weeks Israel and Jerusalem will be fully restored: the transgression finished, sins ended, iniquity reconciled. Everlasting righteousness will be established. The vision and prophecy will be sealed and the Most Holy One anointed.

In other words, within a seventy-week period God’s redemptive purpose for Israel will be perfectly consummated and our Lord Jesus Christ enthroned as King of kings and Lord of lords.
