Judges 6:11
THE ANGEL OF THE LORD
There is only one God and God is a Trinity. Trinity means three in one. God is three Persons in One: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. They are equal in power but have different functions. God the Son is the Lord Jesus Christ.
Who is "the angel of the LORD" in today’s text? That refers to none other than the Lord Jesus Christ although the Bible did not say what exact what form did He appeared in.
The doctrine of Trinity is not easy to understand. The Father, Son and Spirit are different, yet the same at the same time. There is no equivalent in the world today. Some may use analogies like the 3 forms of water under different temperatures: liquid water, steam, and ice but it is incomplete. In any case, what we can do is to take the doctrine of Trinity in faith.
The Trinity was already present at creation when God said in Gen 1:26a, "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…" During the water baptism of Jesus, God the Father spoke in an audible voice, and God the Holy Spirit descended like a dove on God the Son in Luke 3:22, "And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased."
How do members in the Trinity work? Well, one example is in prayer. We don’t pray to Jesus or the Spirit. Instead, we pray to the Father through the power of the Spirit, and on the basis of the Son’s work of salvation of our souls. That is why we pray in Jesus’ name.
Thought: The word, "Trinity" may not be found in the Bible but the Bible speaks about the three persons, the Father, Son and Spirit in one God which is what the doctrine of Trinity means. I believe what the Bible says is true.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the wonderful doctrine of Trinity. I may not understand it fully, but please help me believe it fully, for that is faith. This I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
