GOD’S ORDER TO GIDEON
DECEMBER 12

Judges 6:25-26

GOD’S ORDER TO GIDEON

The same night when Gideon received the sign he asked for, the LORD gave him a job to do. Gideon was to use his father’s young bullock to break his father’s altar to the idol, Baal, and to cut down the grove by it. (the "grove" was some kind of wooden image or symbol of the idol or another idol). Then Gideon must build an altar to the LORD upon the rock. He was to use the young bullock as an offering and burn it with the wood of the grove.

God is holy. We must worship Him in spirit and in truth. To worship God "in spirit" means that we must have a sincere heart, we must really mean it. We must also worship God "in truth" which means it must be according to the Bible, and not in any other way. Dear reader, believe in the Creator, not in idols or other things made by man. Lifeless, man-made idols are not the only idols. Do you know that there are many other invisible idols in our heart? They could be your favourite pop stars, secret yearnings for fame, or even your pet dog. Whatever occupies the topmost place in your heart which rightfully belongs to the Lord is an idol.

Dear child, remember the Lord’s order to Gideon to destroy the idol. Likewise, we must destroy whatever idols there may be in our lives. As pointed out, these may not be physical idols but many of us may have secret idols of the heart. Destroy them by making a stand not to like or go after them!

Try to fill in all the blanks:

Their idols are silver and gold, the work of __________’s hands.
They have _________, but they speak not: eyes have they,
but they __________ not:
They have ears, but they __________ not: __________ have they,
but they smell not:
They have __________, but they handle not: feet have they, but they
__________ not, neither __________ they through their throat.
They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them.

Thought: I must have no idols in my life.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, teach me to worship You in spirit and in truth, and never to put my faith or desire in idols, whether physical or non-physical. This is my prayer in Jesus’ name. Amen.
