THE TIE THAT BINDS

SEPTEMBER 2, Ephesians 1:1

What good is a pastor if he does not love the church, God’s people? Apostle Paul was not just a good preacher, but a good pastor. He cared for people. He loved those who were not just lost without Christ but also Christians weak in their faith. While in jail, he thought of this church because the Christians in Ephesus were dear to him.

Paul, their pastor spent almost three years in Ephesus building up their faith. Over time, his love for them gradually grew strong and deep. Their love for their pastor was not any less. Strong ties were built. Feelings for each other grew deeper. Paul made his farewell speech to the elders as they knew that it was going to be the last time they would see each other. It was a very emotional moment. Such should be the love between a good pastor and the church. This song aptly expresses the love among God’s people.

Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love;
The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.
Before our Father’s throne we pour our ardent pray’rs;
Our fears, our hopes, our aims, are one, our comforts and our cares.
We share our mutual woes, our mutual burdens bear;
And often for each other flows the sympathizing tear.
When we asunder part, it gives us inward pain;
But we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again.

How about you? What is your relationship with other Christians like? Do you have close Christian friends who can encourage you in your trials and temptations? Dear child, remember to have good Christian friends so you can encourage each other in your spiritual walk.

Thought: Does this song describe the love between you and your Christian friends? If not, do something about it.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Christian love. Thank You for Christian friends. Help me spend more time with other Christians so that we can mutually help and support each other in our Christian lives in the way pleasing to You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
