APRIL 18, 2 Corinthians 12:9
Apostle Paul was plagued by an undisclosed disease or weakness. It was described as “a thorn in his flesh”. Causing him tremendous distress and pain, he prayed three times for God to remove it. However, God’s answer was “No”. Why? Because God wanted Paul to experience weakness so that he can continue to rely on God. That is why God gave these beautiful words in today’s text for Paul’s encouragement,” My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”
What is God’s grace? It is unmerited favour from God. It means what we do not deserve yet God gives it to us. God loves us and by His wisdom will always give us what is best for us. What? You mean the illness or weakness was best for Paul? Yes, in God’s eyes, it was and it ought to be for Paul and us. Why? This is to teach us to rely on God always as it is so easy to forget and forsake God if we never have any weakness or problem.
Why didn’t God heal Paul of his weakness? Paul was so actively serving God preaching, teaching and establishing churches. Won’t it be better for Paul to be in a perfect condition to carry on with his work? In man’s eyes, Paul was doing a great job! Well, the Bible says all glory belongs to God. He loves Paul and does not want Paul to be puffed up with pride. Pride will lead to a fall.
God wants Paul to continue to depend fully on Christ and not on his own strength. God’s grace is sufficient to strengthen Paul to do whatever he was commanded to do. Others may then look at Paul’s life and praise God for His grace.
I need God’s grace so that:
1. I will not lose my temper easily.
2. I will learn to share my games with others.
3. I do not hit back at those who hurt me.
