A GOOD NAME

January 27, Proverbs 22:1

“Oh no, Russell is in my class this year.” His form teacher lamented. All the other teachers cast a look of sympathy. Russell is famous for all the wrong reasons. His nicknames include “Rascal”, “Terror of the school” and “The problem kid”. How did Russell earn such a bad name for himself?

Russell is not courteous and does not have respect for others. He snatches things from his classmates. He is dishonest and would deny breaking things in the school compound. Russell does not care what other people think of him. Everyone avoids him because of his bad reputation, and he has lost all his friends.

Businessmen also know the importance of a good name or a good reputation. If they are found to be dishonest, people would not trust them and will shun them. So, if they try to increase their profits through dishonest means, they may end up poorer. God hates dishonesty. He will not bless cheats.

As a Christian, it is even more important to have a good reputation. How can we win souls for the Lord if we cannot even win friends? As children of God, we must never bring shame to God’s name. Having a good name will point others to the glory of God.

What do you think others will say of you behind your back?

Do they have kind things to say of you, that perhaps you are a kind or generous child? Or if you could hear them, would you be sad to hear that they are afraid of befriending you because you’re a selfish or proud child?

Do you have a good or a bad name?

Thought: A good reputation is better than riches.

Prayer: Father in Heaven, help me to be good so that Your name will be praised by people who are watching me. I know that is very tough because I tend to do things my way instead of considering others. So please remind me, Heavenly Father. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
