January 29, Proverbs 26:22
Fire can burn our fingers and a cut from a penknife can also cause a lot of pain. That is why we are warned not to play with fire. Similarly, we must exercise care when using a penknife. Did you know that words that come from our mouth can also hurt others like fire and knives can? The Bible says they can hurt right to the stomach. Can you imagine that?
We have learnt that words of truth and love can be so pleasant. They bring cheer to the downhearted, and give hope to those feeling hopeless. We also know that God hates lips that gossip and lie. Today we are reminded that lies and angry words hurt people deeply.
The words of a talebearer often cause quarrels between friends. They are like oil being added to fire. That is why friends must not allow small misunderstanding to spoil their friendship. A prompt apology can sometimes do wonders. So children, if you know a friend is angry with you, go straightaway to him or her to apologise or clear up any misunderstanding. This will prevent you from losing a friend.
Compare the pair of sentences that have the same message and cross out the one that will hurt:
A. Mummy, you always don’t care for me.
B. Mummy, you must be busy but may I have your attention for a while?
A. I think I prefer you in the red dress you wore last Tuesday.
B. This dress makes you look very ugly.
A. Why is your house so messy, you lazybones?
B. Do you need some help with tidying up your room?
A. You are so lazy! You are good for nothing.
B. Can you help me with the dishes please?
Thought: We must be careful with the words we use.
Prayer: Forgive me Heavenly Father, for hurting others with the words I used. Fill me with Your love and make my speech gracious always. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
