THE BOY WHO OBEYS HIS MASTER

OCTOBER 20, 1 Samuel 20:35-40

Jonathan was the son of King Saul, king of Israel. King Saul was very jealous of David and how it appeared that God wanted David to be the next king. King Saul refused to obey God’s will for he wanted his son, Jonathan to take over and so Saul tried to kill David. Poor David had to hide. However, Jonathan and David were very good friends. Jonathan was a godly young man who despite knowing that he would NOT be the next king, he was determined to help David to take over the throne from his father! So he helped David to find out the king’s plan. They arranged the place, the time and the signal. David watched from his hiding place as Jonathan shot the arrow beyond the young boy, whom Jonathan brought along. His duty was to retrieve the arrows. Then Jonathan shouted to the boy, “Make speed, haste, stay not” - it was the message for David to escape.

Dear children, that young boy didn’t know why he was asked to do what he did, but he obeyed his master. Why? Because he trusted his master. Jonathan may have been a good master to him. Hence, although he did not know the purpose of his task, this young boy fulfilled his important role well.

Sometimes, we may feel that way, don’t we? We are told in the Bible to obey the Lord, not to be selfish but to be kind and patient with others. We may not fully understand or even agree at times but let us continue to obey, for Jesus our Lord and Master loves us dearly and only want the best for us.

Thought: Do I obey my Master?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, please help me to always trust and obey Thee. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
