HOW I KNOW THAT I AM BORN AGAIN
Can we be sure that we are born again? How? What are the signs of a truly born-again Christian?
A baby naturally needs and depends on his mother and her milk. A baby can never live independently by himself. Likewise, a born-again Christian naturally needs and thirsts for the Lord and His Word and he cannot live without the Lord and His Word. That is the first sign. Do we need and thirst for the Lord and His Word? “My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?” (Ps 42:2), and “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby” (1 Pet 2:2). Do we live by the Lord and by God’s Word? “As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me” (John 6:57).
Next, a truly born-again Christian will not purposely and habitually live a life of sin. “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God” (1 John 3:9). This is not perfect sinlessness since he is still living on earth, and is not perfect yet (Phil 3:12-14). But when convicted by the Holy Spirit, he repents right away to restore his fellowship with God (1 John 1:7-10) because he cannot stand being separated from the Lord, crying like David, “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin” (Ps 51:1-2).
With these basic signs of a born-again Christian, we can examine ourselves and see if we are born again.
THOUGHT: It is so wonderful that a sinner like me is born again by God and His Word and that I am His child now!
PRAYER: O Father, I thank Thee for Thy gracious work in my life.
