Colossians 2:2

“…their hearts may be comforted…”

Paul continues in Colossians 2:2 “That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding….” What is the effect of false teachers on the flock? When people succumb to their deceit, they disrupt the unity of the church. As their false teachings spread, families and friendships will be broken. As brethren become adversaries; many will leave the church, some because of doctrine, others because they cannot tolerate the in-fighting that ensues. Those who remain may feel uncertain about what the truth is, and experience doubt and confusion. Paul prayed that these brethren may have their hearts comforted through the right understanding of the Word of God. This comfort comes both from the unity and love shown by the remaining brethren who are not deceived, as well as by the deeper understanding of why God allows such disunity to happen in the church. Indeed the wonderful phrase “all riches of the full assurance of understanding” refers to the strengthened faith that results from a deeper understanding of God’s Word brought about by the conflict, and all the riches or benefits of this strengthened faith.

Many of us who have experienced church splits caused by false teachers within Bible-believing churches can attest to the greater spiritual strength of the church after the split. Yes, we are sad that some have left church as a result of being deceived, but the comfort that results from the unity of those remaining is truly God-sent. We can also attest to a deeper understanding of God and His Word as a result of defending the church against these false teachers. All in all, we realise that truly all things work together for good for those who love God according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). When you encounter problems in the church, do not conclude that these conflicts are signs that Christianity is weak, or that Christians tend to be divisive. Do not conclude that, just because there are doctrinal contentions, there is no absolute truth in God’s Word. Neither should we ever blame God for allowing any of these problems to happen. While we do not pray for church splits, we should not despair when they occur. We must trust God that as long as we defend the faith and stand on the side of the truth, God’s Will is always the best.
