JULY 31, 2 Kings 2:1-11
God gives a prophet power to rebuke men and to foretell future events. Therefore, it is not surprising that Elijah knew when God was taking him to heaven. Even Elisha, his successor and God’s prophets at Bethel and Jericho knew.
Elisha stuck close to him while he travelled from Gilgal to Bethel, then to Jericho and finally to the river Jordan. Fifty prophets came to the river Jordan and stood at a distance. God had gathered them to witness the departure of their leader and they expected no less than a spectacular event. As Elijah smote the waters with his cloak, the waters parted creating dry land for both Elijah and Elisha to walk on. As they talked, a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared from above separating Elijah and Elisha. Thus, Elijah went up to heaven by a whirlwind. What a sight it must have been!
Elijah was taken up to heaven without dying. Would you like to be taken to heaven without dying? One day the Lord Jesus Christ will return, and we will be with Him forever in heaven.
