HAPPY FOR SUCCESS OF OTHERS

AUGUST 30, 1 Samuel 20:17

Many of you will know the biblical story of Jonathan and David. Jonathan was the son of the King Saul, and although Saul wanted Jonathan to be king, Jonathan supported David to be the next king.

That way of thinking is strange to most. Why would Jonathan not want to be king? After all, is it not wonderful to be king for in that position, he could do almost anything he wants! Why did Jonathan give way to David?

Wouldn’t Jonathan be jealous of the future success of David? No. in fact, he was happy for the success of David!

How about you? When you see someone do better than you in class, how do you feel? When you know there is another soccer player more skilled than you are, are you secretly jealous? Some kids like to be class monitors. If you wanted to be one but did not get chosen, how would you treat the class monitor?

There will be times when the Lord calls you to be a supporter of someone’s success. Will you be like Jonathan or would you sulk and hope the other person fails? Learn to be happy for others.

Think of ways to support and encourage someone’s success:
1. _____________________________________________
2. _____________________________________________
3. _____________________________________________
4. _____________________________________________
5. _____________________________________________

Thought: I should not envy others but be happy for their success.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for today’s lesson. Help me to be like Jonathan willing to give way and support others. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
