FEBRUARY 26, Isaiah 53:6
What happens when someone breaks a law in the country? He has to pay for it – might be a fine (pay money) or serve jail term, depending on the crime. When a wrong is done, it must be made right.
When you do something wrong at home, your parents will either scold you or punish you, don’t they? This means any offence (wrongdoing) has to be punished.
Today’s verse reminds us that Jesus took the iniquity of us all. What does it mean? It means that when we sinned against God, we should have been punished. For our sins, the punishment we deserve would be to spend eternity in hell! That would have been such a terrible price to pay if we were to take “our own iniquity upon ourselves”. However, because Jesus died on the Cross for us, He paid the price for you and me. He “took the iniquity of us all” upon himself.
God is holy, without sin. Our sins separate us from God. God is righteous and must punish sins. But God loves us. He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ to come in human form, to die on the Cross, as the punishment (payment) for all the bad things we have done. Jesus is without sin but He bore (took on Himself) all our wickedness (iniquity).
