LET YOUR SPEECH BE GRACIOUS!

MAY 19, Colossians 4:6

“Our memory verse today is Colossians 4:6. ‘Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man,” said Chong’s Sunday school teacher, Brother Mike. “What does salt do?” asked Brother Mike.

Chong felt he knew a little about that! His hand shot up. “It adds flavour to food,” he said, and shared how his mother added salt to flavour her dishes. “That’s great”, said Brother Mike. Can anyone think of something else that salt does?” “Salt is also used to purify and preserve food” added Isabella.

“You are both right” answered Brother Mike. “Colossians 4:6 teaches us how we ought to speak to others ‘with grace, seasoned with salt’. Gracious speech is like speech seasoned with salt. In other words, our speech must be kind and pleasant to others. We must not be rude or aggressive when we speak to others. Whatever we say must also be clean and wholesome, leaving a good taste so to speak in the mouth of hearers.”

“Brother Mike added, “This verse also tells you that you need to ‘know how ye ought to answer every man’. This means you must have a proper and accurate answer if someone asks you about your Christian faith. To do this, you need to study the Bible and know it well. Do you know the Bible well?”

Olivia eagerly raised her hand. “Will having gracious speech and knowing the Bible well, help us to witness to others?” “Yes, it will, and I certainly encourage all of you to exercise gracious speech when you speak to others, especially to non-believers. Through your good testimony and knowledge of the Bible, you will be able to share the Gospel with them, when opportunity arises”, said Brother Mike.

All too soon, it was time for the kids to go home. “Okay. You’re dismissed,” said Brother Mike. “As you go, think about what you have learnt today and remember to be a good witness for the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Thought: Is your speech gracious? Do you know the Bible well?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be gracious in my speech and to be a good witness for the Lord Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
