JOHN: HIS GOSPEL OF JESUS’ DEITY
Another significant hero of the early church is John the Apostle. The Gospel of John stands unique among the four Gospels. Not because it teaches a different truth, for all Scripture has one Author and one message, but because John highlighted with particular clarity the divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ. From the very opening words, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1), John revealed the eternal existence and divine nature of Christ.
While Matthew, Mark, and Luke emphasise the humanity and earthly ministry of Jesus, John drew our attention to His eternal generation and His identity as the only begotten Son of God. Jesus of Nazareth, born of the virgin Mary, is not merely a man. He is the God-Man, the Theanthropos (Greek). He is fully God and fully man, no more, no less. He is one Person of the Triune God: distinct from the Father and the Spirit, yet equally God with them. Throughout history, heresies have sought to deny or distort this truth. Yet, John’s Gospel leaves no room for doubt. Jesus is the eternal Creator, the Almighty, the One whose wisdom and power surpass all human understanding. He is with His people always, even to the end of the age. He came down into this world to redeem sinners, and He reigns forever and ever.
Do you truly believe in the deity of Christ? Do you acknowledge Him as the eternal Son of God, the Creator of all things? Do you trust Him as the Redeemer who transforms sinful lives into new creations? If so, why hesitate to proclaim Him? Why hold back from declaring His name before others? Why be ashamed of the One who bore shame for you?
John was willing to suffer persecution because he was convinced of the divine Christ. His testimony calls us to boldness: if we believe Jesus is truly God, then let us live and speak as those who belong to Him.
THOUGHT: Am I truly a believer of the Jesus Christ of the Bible, the eternal Son of God?
PRAYER: Father, convict me to believe deeply in the deity of Jesus Christ. Not only in my heart, but in the way I live. May my words and actions testify to His glory.
